Ravenscar in Yorkshire

Does Yorkshire sound appealing as a holiday destination? We can’t blame you for wanting to make the visit, with so many wonderful locations, attractions and activities waiting to be enjoyed. Ravenscar acts as the perfect base to explore the county, thanks to its picturesque setting and convenient location. In this guide, we highlight what makes Ravenscar so ideal and why you should consider it as a starting point to explore what else North Yorkshire has to offer.

Easy access to Robin Hood’s Bay

Ravenscar is perched on the North Yorkshire coast, offering beautiful views over lovely Robin Hood’s Bay. However, you don’t have to be satisfied with the view, as this charming seaside village is easy to access. Robin Hood’s Bay gets its name from the legendary outlaw, but the village is a peaceful and serene location. By opting for a Ravenscar hotel near Robin Hood’s Bay, you can spend a lovely time in the village, wondering its old streets, relaxing on the beach, and visiting its cosy shops and pubs. You can even partake in some horse riding on the beach!

Describing the scene at Robin Hood’s Bay, Sophie, from the travel blog Third Eye Traveller, shares: “To the locals, it’s known as ‘Bay Town’ and it’s a quaint little place with cobbled ‘ginnels’, cottages, traditional fisherman’s pubs and an old coastguard lookout. It makes an incredible day trip in the North York Moors National Park and there are plenty of things to do in Robin Hoods Bay that make it worth visiting too.”

It’s super close to Scarborough and Whitby

Scarborough coast

In Scarborough and Whitby, two of Yorkshire’s premier seaside destinations are right on your doorstep if you choose to stay in Ravenscar.

Scarborough is Britain’s original seaside resort and if you are looking for a quintessential UK beach break, it’s certainly the place to be, with hotels near Scarborough being available. Featuring two award-winning sandy beaches, a beautiful coastline, a castle, and top attractions like the Sea Life Centre and Peasholm Park, there’s plenty to keep you busy.

Blogger Rachel Nicole hails from these parts and has shared a bit more insight into this amazing town: “No matter where I am when I tell people this is where I am from, they’ve been here on their Summer Holidays. Scarborough is actually quite the popular destination in summer as it’s the biggest town along the North Yorkshire coast. Not only does Scarborough have two beaches but we have the castle, countless arcades and amusements and in summer you can catch some of the UK’s biggest acts at the Open Air Theatre.”

Whitby is another brilliant seaside town to visit when staying in Ravenscar, just a 25-minute drive along the coast. With cliff top views over the North Sea, Whitby boasts its own amazing features and attractions, perhaps most famously the gothic Whitby Abbey – which served as inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But there is also the beach, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, and the famed Whitby Steps.

Sophie and Adam from the travel blog We Dream of Travel, have enjoyed Whitby themselves, and include the steps as one of their recommendations: “No visit to Whitby would be complete without climbing the 199 steps to St Mary’s Church (if you’re physically able). This challenging climb offers spectacular views over the town. If you’re not able to manage the climb, don’t worry, you can drive round to St Mary’s Church to allow you to still take in the views.”

The North York Moors are on your doorstep

Ravenscar is also the perfect opportunity to explore the beautiful North York Moors. This majestic National Park contains one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK and is a truly relaxing place to delve into. Here you will find the most amazing countryside walks, idyllic scenery, picturesque villages, stately homes and the ruins of more than one of history’s lost abbeys. If you are looking for a location to enjoy with friends, family, and perhaps a four-legged friend, the North York Moors offers so much and provides a true taste of Yorkshire life.

When it comes to walks in the North York Moors, one of the most popular spots is Roseberry Topping, the highest point in the moors at 320 metres high. Maja, from the travel blog Away with Maja, has made it up herself and has shared the following: “The walk is short (just under 2 hours up and down) and it’s easy to follow. The views of the surrounding area are stunning though, and well worth the climb! You can also walk out along Newton Moor to the Captain Cook Monument.”

It’s a peaceful and relaxing setting

When going on holiday, having a place to come back to at the end of the day that’s peaceful and relaxing is always a bonus. With Ravenscar, you have access to so much of what North Yorkshire has to offer and know that after all your exploring, sightseeing, and activities, you can unwind in a quiet location that feels away from the world. Ravenscar has the most beautiful coastal views for those weary in mind and body, with dramatic cliffs and rocky coves, as well as its very own seal colony. If you are looking to get away for a quiet break away from the day-to-day rush, while still having access to plenty of activities and attractions when you want them, Ravenscar should certainly be considered.

Ravenscar suits all types

It doesn’t matter what type of holiday you are looking for; Ravenscar fits the bill. Perhaps you are hoping for a romantic getaway on a birthday or anniversary – the spectacular coastal views, cosy fireplaces, and quiet countryside walks will certainly appeal. Perhaps you are looking for a family holiday with children – Ravenscar puts you on the doorstep of amazing attractions for young and old to enjoy, not to mention a plethora of beaches. Maybe you are seeking an active break, packed with lots of activities? Ravenscar has you covered here too with quick access to epic hikes, scenic cycle trails, and high-octane delights like paragliding.

If a more active holiday is what you are looking for or to just enjoy a lovely coastal walk or two, Michael B Shannon has plenty of advice and suggested routes, such as Ravenscar to Scarborough along the wonderful Cleveland Way. Michael has shared his thoughts on Ravenscar and what he thinks makes it so appealing:

“Most people visit Ravenscar for the stunning views over Robin Hood’s Bay. These are spectacular all year round, but especially so in springtime when the gorse is in bloom and late summer when the heather is flowering.”
