Most teams ever wanted for Scarborough boat race

14 March 2017

More teams than ever before are wanted for this year’s Scarborough Dragon Boat Race.

2017’s edition of the Scarborough Dragon Boat Race is due to take place Sunday 11th June and is now looking for even more teams and accompanying dragon boats to participate in the event.

Held for the last seven years, the race will be contested on Wykeham Lakes; and while they’ve not been short of boats in the past, the Scarborough Rotary Club is looking at making 2017 the best year yet for this exciting event.

Reported on Yorkshire Coast Radio, the previous highest number of entrants has been 22, a figure that Mile Wilkinson of the Rotary Club is optimistic about being able to beat this time round.

“We’re looking to have our best year, with possibly 30 dragon boats racing. 22 boats is great, because it provides for a good day’s racing, it’s just that the object of this day is to raise money for local charities.

So clearly, the more boats we can get in, the more money we can raise for them.”

With a good cause at play and a whole lot of fun to be had, surely Mr Williams won’t have too much trouble finding eager participants.

The Rotary Club is also looking towards local companies, businesses and individuals to sponsor a boat for £400 further adding to the good work being done.

Each boat competing on the water is made up of 16 paddlers and a drummer, and the races are split up in various heats containing three boats a piece.

In past years the Scarborough Dragon Boat Race has managed to accumulate between £7000 – £8000 for local charities, making this not only a wonderful summer excursion when staying at a Scarborough Hotel, but also an event that does some real good for people who need it most.
