Scarborough Hotels
Though not located in Scarborough itself Raven Hall Hotel makes for a great place to stay if your interested in the Scarborough as this historical Yorkshire town is located just a 10 minute drive from the Hotel. Read on below for more information about the town.
Scarborough is a town with a long history, the roots of the town can be found all the way back in 966AD when it was founded by the Viking raider Thorgils Skarthi. This original settlement was destroyed soon after however by another band of Vikings and the town did not fully recover until around 1140AD, when a castle to protect the town was constructed. Charters we're awarded to the town in 1155AD, by the then King Henry II which allowed a market to be setup on the sands and trade to flourish.
In 1253 the towns trade was boosted again when the Scarborough Fair was permitted by Royal Charter, allowing the creation of a trade festival that drew in traders from all over Europe, this festival ran yearly for nearly 500 years from the 13th to the 18th century.
In 1626 an acidic water spring was discovered in the cliffs south of the town, this lead to the creation of the Scarborough Spa, which attracted a large number of people to the town. This increase in visitors lead to Scarborough becoming Britain's first seaside resort, a rail connection and later in 1845 the construction of the Grand Hotel, the largest hotel in Europe at the time.
The town today is still overlooked by a high rocky promontory pointing eastward into the North Sea, on which sits the ruins of Scarborough Castle, separating the sea front into north and south bays. It's the southern bay that was the site of the original settlement and that still the focus of the town today, with its sandy beaches and amusement arcades.
Attractions wise, apart from the castle ruins and the grand hotel, there's also the fantastic Scarborough lighthouse which was constructed in the 19th century for this then busy port.
If this sound like an attractive day out then instead of booking Scarborough Accommodation why not consider staying in the fantastic Raven Hall Hotel , set just a short distance from the Town.
