Robin Hoods Bay Hotels

Though not in the town itself Raven Hall Hotel makes for a fantastic location to stay if your interested in Robin Hoods Bay as this fantastic little fishing town is located just a 10 minute drive from the Hotel. Read on below for more information about the town.

Although the reasons behind the naming of the village is uncertain it has been linked to a story about Robin Hood. The story tells of Robin stepping in to protect the village from French pirates, who we're plundering the village, driving them off and returning the loot to the villagers.

Even if this story may or may not be true there is a connection between the town and smugglers. The 18th Century saw a boom of smuggling activity along the Yorkshire coast with many luxury items being smuggled into the UK from France and the Netherlands to avoid the duty. Robin Hoods Bay, with its twisting streets is rumoured to still have a series of underground tunnels connecting some of the houses.

This darker underside did not take away from the towns main source of income however, which was for a long time its fishing industry. Although fishing in many small towns like this has been in decline since the 19th century, the town still has strong fishing ties.

The town is set in a cleft between two steep cliffs, with the main street though the town winding down from the cliff top, where a manor house and church overlook the town. It runs though the town, over a small river and then ends at the cobbled slipway of Wayfoot.

Attractions in the town include the fantastic Old St Stephen's Church, standing proud on the cliff side above the town. The beautiful little church has been standing on this location since it was build in 1821 and, although looking a little weathered now, it's a great place to visit.

If your looking for something a little more educational then there's the Old Coastguard Station. This visitors centre, now owned and run by the National Trust and run in partnership with the North York Moors National Park, is a great way to learn more about the geology and history of the area.

If this sound like an attractive day out then instead of booking Robin Hoods Bay Accommodation why not consider staying in the beautifully set Raven Hall Hotel .
